Decarboxylation

Decarboxylation is the process of activating psychoactive compounds in the cannabis plant so that users can feel the psychoactive effects when they consume it. In a scientific definition, it is a chemical reaction between removing a carboxyl group and releasing carbon dioxide (CO2). For example, a torch flame activates a dab rig, a vape pen’s atomizer. The high temperatures involved in the process will decarboxylate properties in the weed, making them easier for the human body to absorb. Sometimes, decarboxylation can naturally happen, especially when curing or drying cannabis. Moreover, oxygen can contribute to this decarboxylation process, so manufacturers keep them in an airtight container to maintain potency and freshness.
