Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of receptors in the body that interact with cannabinoids. The ECS is responsible for a variety of functions in the body, including pain relief, anxiety relief, and regulation of the immune system. The ECS is also responsible for the “high” people feel after consuming cannabis.

The ECS comprises two types of receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain and spinal cord, while CB2 receptors are found mainly in the immune system. THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, binds to these receptors and activates them. This is what causes the “high” feeling associated with cannabis.

Also, ECS is a critical player in homeostasis or the maintenance of a stable internal environment. When the body is in homeostasis, it can function optimally. This is why maintaining a healthy endocannabinoid system is so important for overall health and well-being.
