How to Clarify Butter for Cannabutter

Did you know that using clarified butter in your cannabutter infusion can result in a higher quality product? In addition to its enhanced taste and smooth consistency, clarified butter also keeps longer and absorbs a higher THC content.

Below, we’ll discuss how to clarify butter for cannabutter and how a LĒVO II device can help you simplify the infusion process.

What Is Cannabutter?

Put simply: cannabutter is cannabis butter, which is butter infused with cannabis flower or trim. Cannabutter is the foundational ingredient in many cannabis edibles. Knowing how to make cannabutter is crucial for any cannabis connoisseur who wants to create their own edible products.

Cannabutter can take a few hours to concoct because marijuana must be “decarbed” or oven-baked and dried before it can be infused into butter. The decarbing process “activates” the cannabis so that it produces the desired effect.

When making cannabutter, we recommend using cannabis “trim” as opposed to cannabis flower. Cannabis flower contains the most significant percentage of cannabinoids (the compounds that get you “high”). But trim, which includes large leaves, sugar leaves, stems, and other parts of the marijuana plant, also contains cannabinoids.

If you smoke cannabis, we suggest saving the flower for that purpose since cannabis trim is not suitable for smoking. Instead of tossing your cannabis trim, use it to infuse your cannabutter!

Do I Need to Clarify Butter Before Infusing?

While you don’t need to clarify butter before infusing, taking this extra step can enhance your cannabutter. You are essentially removing unnecessary milk solids from the butter when you clarify. Milk solids are the main reason why butter burns so easily. When you remove the milk solids, you’ll be left with butterfat, also known as ghee.

What Are the Benefits of Clarifying Butter to Make Cannabutter?

There are three main reasons why using clarified butter is preferable to regular butter when making cannabis edibles.

  • Clarified butter makes more potent edibles because it absorbs THC better than regular butter or coconut oil.
  • Clarified butter burns less easily because it has a higher smoke point. If your recipe requires higher temperatures, clarifying your butter will prevent it from burning.
  • Clarified butter is translucent, which can give gummy and candy edibles a more natural appearance.
  • Clarified butter also gives cannabutter a smooth, silky texture and even improves the flavor.
