Senate passes bill to expand medical marijuana research

For the first time in history both chambers in Congress have passed a standalone bill related to marijuana. Senate unanimously passed a bill to expand medicinal marijuana research on Wednesday. This bill was previously unanimously passed by the House in July.

The bill will now go to President Biden for approval, according to Politico. As federally marijuana is still classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance this bill will allow for scientists and doctors to study benefits and drawbacks easier.

Experts agree the passage of this bill shows the shift in perceptions of marijuana and could serve as a stepping stone for passing other bills related to marijuana.
