New Poll Finds 60% of Americans Support Legalizing Marijuana

A new survey indicates the substantial level of support for the legalization of marijuana in the United States.

The poll by You Gov has found that 60% of Americans support the legalization of marijuana, while 30% are opposed to it. It also showed that 57% of adults in the U.S. have used the drug, 42% more than once.  The poll was conducted prior to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s recommendation that marijuana be re-classified under federal law from a Schedule 1 drug to a less dangerous Schedule III level.

The You Gov survey asked about three other psychoactive drugs as well, and found that 20% of U.S. adults have used psilocybin (magic mushrooms), 16% have tried LSD (acid) and 11% have taken MDMA (ecstasy, or molly).  About half of those surveyed have used them more than once.

Over half of the people who have tried each drug said they have had a positive experience, including 57% for marijuana.  About one quarter said the experience was equally positive and negative, while about 20% said their experiences were mostly negative.

As opposed to the 60% who favor marijuana legalization, just 27% support legalizing psilocybin, 16% MDMA, and 15% LSD.

People who have tried each drug are more likely to favor legalizing it than people who haven’t. A total of 78% of marijuana users support its legalization. 63% of psilocybin users want it legalized, and 55% of MDMA users support MDMA legalization. There is more division among LSD users regarding its legalization: 38% would support it and 43% would oppose it.

The poll was conducted online on April 25 – 28, 2024 among 1,134 U.S. adult citizens. Respondents were selected from YouGov’s opt-in panel using sample matching.
