Sativa

Sativa is one of the two main types of the cannabis plant, often associated with its energizing, uplifting, and cerebral effects.

Derived from the Latin botanical adjective sativum, which means cultivated, the cannabis term sativa was first used by English herbalist William Turner as a scientific name for cultivated hemp. Though people say “sativa” and mean the uplifting, cerebral, and energetic experience the plant produces, this is not always accurate.

The effects of cannabis are more complicated than just indica (the other main type) or sativa. Sativa is known to be more of an energizing type, while indica is a relaxant. Nevertheless, contrary to popular belief, sativa taxonomy does not help predict the cannabis plant’s effects. Moreover, the term also describes a plant’s morphology during growth in cultivation.

Cannabis sativa plants are tall with long, thin leaves and grow best in warm climates. They have a more extended flowering period compared to indica plants, which is why growers need more patience when growing them.
